How it works
Turn your timestamp-and-title draft into a copyable chapter list. This validator checks YouTube’s documented requirements: a first timestamp at 00:00, at least three timestamps in ascending order, and chapters of at least 10 seconds. The video duration lets it check the final chapter too. It normalizes timestamps and removes an optional dash between a timestamp and title.
A few things to know
Checks only the pasted chapter list; it does not fetch videos, generate timestamps from a transcript, or confirm channel eligibility. YouTube may require access to advanced features or disable chapters for some content. Without video duration, the final chapter cannot be fully validated. Input is limited to 1,000 lines and 100,000 characters. Requirements reference: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/9884579?hl=en.
When to use this tool
YouTube chapters make a long tutorial easier to navigate. Before publishing a description, check that its timestamps form a usable sequence rather than merely looking correct. This validator checks the pasted list, normalizes timestamps and calculates chapter lengths. Adding the video duration lets it check the final segment as well. It helps you prepare description text; it does not generate chapters from a video or confirm account eligibility.
- Check a tutorial’s chapter draft before updating its description.
- Normalize mixed minute and hour timestamp formats in a long recording.
- Catch a final chapter that begins too close to the video’s end.
How to use youtube chapter generator and validator
Paste timestamps and titles
Enter one timestamp followed by a title per line. Use mm:ss or h:mm:ss and start at zero. Include at least three chapter entries, with meaningful titles that describe the segment.
Enter the video duration
Supply the actual duration in the same timestamp format when available. Without it, the tool can check gaps between chapters but cannot confirm the final chapter’s length.
Correct issues and copy
Run the check, fix duplicate, out-of-order or short segments, then copy or download the normalized list. Paste it into the video description and confirm chapter behavior in YouTube after saving.
A three-minute workflow tutorial
Inputs
Enter 0:00 Introduction, 0:30 Choose your tools, 1:15 Build the workflow and 2:20 Next steps on separate lines. Set duration to 3:00.
Result
The list passes with four chapters. Their lengths are 30, 45, 65 and 40 seconds. The output normalizes the starts to 00:00, 00:30, 01:15 and 02:20.
What it means
Every calculated segment is at least 10 seconds. The text is ready for description review, but a successful format check is not a guarantee that YouTube will display chapters.
Common mistakes to avoid
Forgetting the opening segment
A list that starts at 00:15 omits the required zero timestamp. Add an accurate opening chapter instead of simply renaming a later timestamp.
Checking only earlier gaps
The last chapter has no following timestamp. Enter the video duration to catch a short ending segment rather than assuming it has enough time.
Using timestamps as titles
A valid timestamp still needs a descriptive title. Choose short, specific labels that help viewers find a task without having to watch the entire recording.

What chapter rules does this validator check?
It checks that the first entry starts at zero, that there are at least three chapters, and that timestamps are unique and ascending. Known chapter lengths must be at least 10 seconds. It also requires a nonempty title after each timestamp.
Why is the video duration optional?
Most chapter lengths can be calculated from consecutive starts. Only the final chapter requires the ending time. Leaving duration blank gives a useful partial check, but the final length is explicitly shown as unknown rather than silently treated as valid.
Can I use timestamps for videos longer than an hour?
Yes. Use h:mm:ss, such as 1:02:15. The tool also accepts minute-based values such as 60:00 and normalizes them into hour format. Seconds must stay within 00–59, and the minute component in hour format must also stay within that range.
Are exactly 10-second chapters accepted?
Yes. Ten seconds is the accepted boundary. A start at 00:00 followed by 00:10 gives a 10-second segment. For the final chapter, the entered duration must similarly leave at least 10 seconds after its start.
Can I paste bullets or a whole video description?
Paste the chapter list rather than unrelated description paragraphs. Each nonempty line must begin with a timestamp and contain a title. An optional dash between timestamp and title is removed, but ordinary bullet prefixes or nonchapter text are not parsed as chapters.
Does this create timestamps automatically?
No. You choose the segment boundaries by reviewing your video or transcript. The tool validates those choices and formats the text. It does not fetch videos, identify topics from audio or check that each timestamp matches what the viewer sees.
Why do chapters sometimes fail to appear after a passed check?
The pasted text is only one part of the process. Chapter availability can depend on YouTube’s feature access and content rules. Review the official chapter guidance, your account’s feature access and the saved description if the player does not show the expected chapters.
How should I fix duplicate or descending timestamps?
Review the actual video sequence and move or edit the affected entries. Automatically sorting them could hide a mistaken boundary or mismatched title, so the tool reports the problem instead. Rerun the check once the list reflects the true recording order.
