How it works

Convert an already measured area between square metric units, international square foot-based units, hectares and acres. Area factors are the square of the corresponding length factors, not the length factors themselves.

Converted value = input value × source factor in square meters ÷ destination factor in square meters.

A few things to know

Converts area values; does not calculate an area from dimensions, land boundaries or projections. Uses international feet and acres, not legacy U.S. survey definitions. Nonnegative values only; no allowance for waste, wall openings or overlapping shapes. Display uses up to 12 significant digits; this is not arbitrary-precision arithmetic or a measurement calibration. Numeric magnitude is bounded to 1e100, with nonzero inputs at least 1e-100.

A little context

When to use this tool

Area conversion uses squared distance factors. A square meter is therefore not converted to square feet with the same ratio as a meter to a foot. This area converter translates a measured area among metric square units, international square foot-based units, hectares and acres. The equivalent-value table makes it useful for reading property specifications or comparing coverage figures. It accepts an area you already know; it does not calculate a shape’s area from side lengths or map boundaries.

  • Compare a room area in square feet with a metric floor-area figure.
  • Translate a land area from international acres into hectares or square meters.
  • Check the unit basis of a material coverage specification before performing a separate quantity estimate.

How to use area converter

  1. Enter an existing area

Put the numeric area in Value. If you have length and width instead, calculate the area separately before entering it.

  2. Choose the original area unit

Use From unit to specify the square unit, hectare or international acre. Do not select a linear unit for an area quantity.

  3. Compare the target and table

Set To unit and calculate. Read Converted value and review the equivalent areas; the CSV export records the same table.

Try the numbers

An international acre expressed in square meters

Inputs

Value 1; From unit International acres; To unit Square meters (m²).

Result

Converted value is 4046.8564224 square meters. The table also gives 43,560 square international feet and 0.40468564224 hectares.

What it means

The acre represents an area, not a particular rectangular shape. Any shape with that area has the same unit conversion; perimeter and side lengths cannot be determined from the result.

Common mistakes to avoid

Applying a linear length factor

Square the corresponding length factor for square units. A meter-to-centimeter ratio of 100 becomes an area ratio of 10,000.

Assuming a plot shape

An acre conversion does not establish dimensions or usable space. Equal areas can have very different shapes and perimeters.

Using a legacy survey acre

The acre choice is based on international feet. Historical survey-acre figures can require a different documented basis.

Frequently asked questions

Definitions, edge cases, and practical next steps for this tool. Search all tool FAQs ↗

How is an area value converted?

The source value is multiplied by its square-meter factor, then divided by the destination factor. Square-unit factors come from squared length definitions. Hectares and international acres have their own explicit square-meter factors in the same calculation.

How many square centimeters are in a square meter?

There are 10,000, because one meter contains 100 centimeters along each dimension. A square one meter by one meter is 100 centimeters by 100 centimeters. This squared relationship is why a length conversion factor cannot be reused directly.

What definition of acre is used?

One international acre is 43,560 square international feet, equivalent to 4046.8564224 square meters. The converter excludes the older U.S. survey-acre definition. Confirm the basis of historical land records rather than assuming the unit name alone establishes it.

How does a hectare compare with a square kilometer?

A hectare is 10,000 square meters, while a square kilometer is 1,000,000 square meters. Therefore 100 hectares equal one square kilometer. Hectares are area units and should not be confused with a linear length or a volume.

Can I calculate a room’s area here?

The tool accepts an area value only. For a rectangle, calculate length times width in compatible units before entry. Irregular shapes, wall openings and other adjustments need their own area calculation; the converter does not infer those from a total.

Does the result include material waste?

No. Conversion preserves the measured area without adding waste, overlaps or spare material. If planning paint, flooring or another material, apply the product’s coverage and your chosen allowance separately after confirming the area’s unit basis.

Can this convert a map into a land area?

No. It does not read maps, coordinates or projections. A land area calculated elsewhere can be converted here, but projection distortion and the distinction between planar and surface area are outside this numeric unit-conversion tool.

What precision and inputs are supported?

Enter a nonnegative decimal or scientific-notation area without symbols. Zero is valid. Outputs display up to 12 significant digits with floating-point arithmetic, so their detail should not be mistaken for additional surveying or measurement accuracy.
