How it works
Convert volume between metric, cubic and explicitly named US liquid or Imperial units. Cup conventions are labeled separately so a recipe or container conversion does not silently substitute one regional measure for another.
A few things to know
Volume only, not mass or ingredient weight; cups-to-grams needs density. US dry measures, 240 mL US labeling cups and recipe-specific cups are excluded. The Imperial cup option explicitly means 10 Imperial fluid ounces, and the metric cup option means 250 mL. Nonnegative values only. Display uses up to 12 significant digits; this is not arbitrary-precision arithmetic or a measurement calibration. Numeric magnitude is bounded to 1e100, with nonzero inputs at least 1e-100.
When to use this tool
A gallon or cup is ambiguous unless its definition is known. This volume converter separates US liquid measures from Imperial measures and labels three cup conventions explicitly. It also supports liters, milliliters and cubic units for container and capacity comparisons. Enter the quantity and source unit, then read the selected equivalent or download the full table. The tool converts volume only: relating cups or milliliters to grams requires the substance’s density and cannot be supplied by a universal unit factor.
- Compare a container capacity in US liquid gallons with a liter specification.
- Check a recipe’s cup convention before translating its volume into milliliters.
- Express an existing cubic volume in liters without using a linear or square conversion ratio.
How to use volume converter
Enter the numeric volume
Place the quantity in Value without unit text or fractions. Convert a mixed quantity into one decimal unit before entering it.
Confirm the regional convention
Choose From unit carefully. US liquid and Imperial gallons, pints and fluid ounces are separate. Cup options state the convention in their labels.
Calculate and check the equivalent
Set To unit and calculate. Review Converted value, then use the table or CSV export for other supported equivalents of the same volume.
One US liquid gallon in liters
Inputs
Value 1; From unit US liquid gallons; To unit Liters (L).
Result
Converted value is 3.785411784 liters. The table gives 3,785.411784 milliliters and 16 US customary cups.
What it means
The selected gallon is the US liquid definition. Selecting one Imperial gallon instead yields 4.54609 liters. The regional label is therefore part of the quantity, not an optional display preference.
Common mistakes to avoid
Ignoring the gallon label
US liquid and Imperial gallons are different volumes. Do not select the closest-looking name without checking the original specification.
Assuming all cups equal 250 mL
The metric cup option is 250 mL, but the US customary and stated Imperial cup conventions have different values.
Converting volume straight into mass
A flour cup and an oil cup do not have the same mass. Ingredient density and packing are outside this converter.
Frequently asked questions

What gallon definitions does the tool use?
US liquid gallon is 3.785411784 liters and Imperial gallon is 4.54609 liters. US dry measures are excluded. Select the definition from your source rather than assuming a country name or an unlabeled gal abbreviation is enough.
What do the three cup options mean?
US customary cup is 8 US fluid ounces, or 236.5882365 mL. Metric cup is explicitly the 250 mL convention. Imperial cup is explicitly the 10 Imperial fluid ounce convention, or 284.130625 mL; recipe-specific alternatives are not inferred.
Is the US cup a 240 mL labeling cup?
No. The option is the US customary 8-fluid-ounce cup. A 240 mL cup used in some labeling contexts is excluded. If a recipe states its own cup volume, use that stated milliliter amount instead of assuming it matches a listed convention.
How do cubic units convert to liters?
A cubic-meter volume contains 1,000 liters. Cubic inch and foot factors use the cube of their international meter length definitions, then express the result in liters. Cube the length factor rather than applying it once or twice.
Are milliliters and cubic centimeters equal?
Yes, the tool treats one milliliter as one cubic centimeter. They describe the same volume with different unit names. That equivalence does not imply one gram of every substance occupies one milliliter; mass still depends on density.
Can this convert fluid ounces to ordinary ounces?
No. Fluid ounces describe volume, while avoirdupois ounces describe mass. The US and Imperial fluid ounce options also differ from each other. Use a mass converter for known mass values and a density-based calculation when relating the two quantities.
Does the calculator account for temperature or packing?
It applies fixed unit relationships to the volume entered. It does not predict expansion, density changes or how tightly a dry ingredient is packed. Those factors affect the measured quantity itself, rather than the arithmetic of changing its volume unit.
How should I enter a fractional quantity?
Use a decimal, such as 0.5 for half a selected cup. The input does not parse text fractions or expressions. Nonnegative values and scientific notation are supported; outputs display up to 12 significant digits using floating-point arithmetic.
