How it works
Count UTF-16 code units, Unicode code points, grapheme clusters, whitespace-delimited words and logical lines, then estimate reading time at your selected pace.
Read the source reference ↗A few things to know
Word boundaries are whitespace-based, so counts are unsuitable for some writing systems. Reading time excludes comprehension, pauses and media. Unicode segmentation may vary by browser version.
When to use this tool
Choose the character measure that matches your publishing limit. A visible emoji can contain several code points and even more UTF-16 code units.
- Check writing length.
- Inspect emoji counts.
- Estimate reading time.
How to use text statistics and character counter
Prepare the inputs
Paste the original text and keep a copy of it.
Choose the settings
Choose the conversion settings; identifiers are preserved as text.
Review and export
Review the output and download it before using it elsewhere.
Try the supplied example
Inputs
text: A short paragraph. A second line.; pace: 200
Result
The example contains a two-line text with six whitespace-delimited words.
What it means
Reading duration is an estimate at your chosen pace, not an observed reader result.

Frequently asked questions
Definitions, edge cases, and practical next steps for this tool. Search all tool FAQs ↗
Why do character counts differ?
Code units, Unicode code points and visible grapheme clusters measure different things.
Is an emoji always one character?
It may be one grapheme but several code points and UTF-16 units.
How are words counted?
By nonempty whitespace-separated chunks; this is approximate for languages without spaces.
Do blank lines count?
Yes. Logical lines include blank lines and a final empty line after a newline.
Is reading time exact?
No. It divides the approximate word count by your chosen words per minute.
Can I measure UTF-8 bytes?
This tool reports character measures; the YouTube metadata checker additionally reports description bytes.
Are my inputs uploaded or stored?
Processing happens locally in your browser. This tool does not upload inputs. Downloads stay on your device; sharing or opening them in another service is your choice.
What should I check before using the output?
Word boundaries are whitespace-based, so counts are unsuitable for some writing systems. Reading time excludes comprehension, pauses and media. Unicode segmentation may vary by browser version.
